Workshops and Events

For the 2024 Fall Semester, the Data Lab is primarily offering two types of workshops, both co-hosted with individual departments and researchers. A so-called "Frog Day", which is a basic data security and storage workshop, and courses for external participants on data science and digital methods. Along with that, we are offering some smaller data management workshops for students and faculty, and possibly other data science workshops to meet demand. If you have any ideas or needs for workshops, or would like to have us involved with an event, please contact us.

Anthropology Intro for new PHD Students Sept 5th 11:00 (Anthropology only, no RSVP required)

Intro to Python for Absolute Beginners Part 1 (KUB Data Lab) 25 Sep, 9:00-12:00

Intro to Python for Absolute Beginners Part 2 (KUB Data Lab) 7 Oct, 9:00-12:30

This two-part course is intended for students who have never tried programming before and want to build their skills in Python from the bottom up.

Intimidated by mathematics, numbers, and obscure Python scripts? Don’t be! We will be covering all the very basic concepts and building blocks in order to get complete beginners, who have no experience writing code, working in Python.

This will include explaining the concepts of variables and data types, as well generating some basic scripts to interact with these data, such as lists, loops, and conditionals. By the end of this course, you will have an understanding of the basic building blocks in Python. You will also come away with an appreciation for how a computer program “thinks”.

The course is divided in two parts. The first (25 Sep) covers different datatypes in Python and how data is stored. In other words, it is an introduction to the building blocks of coding in Python.

The second part (7 Oct) expands on this by putting these blocks together to create simple scripts. If you already have some understanding of Python, feel free to skip the first section. Otherwise, we recommend that you start with pt. 1 and then move on to pt. 2.

Practical information: We will be working in Jupyter Lab / Jupyter Notebook, which requires some installation, but you can also work in either Google Colabs or ERDA which require only a Google or KU account, respectively. For more information and help, consult "Install & Run Python" on the KUB Data Lab’s course page or feel free to reach out to us for help if you face any problems:

ChatGPT as a Research Assistant? Annotate your data with Language Models 23 Oct, 13:00-15:00

A hands-on workshop on annotating your data using off-the-self LLMs. We will mainly focus on text and image data.

We will start with interacting with the OpenAI API (setting up an account, pricing, models available, prompt engineering, overcoming issues with large prompts, best practices, approximating deterministic-replicable outputs etc). We will also discuss setting up an open-source model from hugging face locally as an alternative to OpenAI’s API.

If participants are interested, we might also dedicate some time to setting up an account and script to access Deepl’s API for translation.

Some experience with Python and working with APIs is needed. This is not geared towards beginners but if you are not sure if you can make the most out of the workshop, feel free to reach out to us to discuss this.
